Above is a link to a very interesting article. It's a story that takes place in a very small town called Kilgarvan in Ireland. The Kerry County Council passed a motion letting people, who live in country areas, have a few beers before driving home. This motion was introduced by a man named Danny Healy-Rae who is a politician and a pub owner himself. His two arguments that he attempted to use to justify this proposal was that it would revive pub culture and help the "isolation of rural life", which in his eyes would lower the suicide rate. The politician although did say that the driving would only be permitted on low used streets and at low speeds. There have been many issues with this proposal between those who are willing to agree and allow this and those who are disappointed in the council and disapprove. As the days go on, those in opposition to this act have been becoming worried for many fear that this motion will successfully be passed.
I myself think that this is an absurd act. Although the driving would be required to be on little used roads and at slow speeds, I think that it is not acceptable. Drinking and driving is very dangerous and the thought of allowing it, truly stumbles me. For many years, all over the world driving under the influence has been the cause of many deaths and fatal injuries. In my mind, I don't care whether this would revive pub culture, because although it may seem harmless due to the fact that it'll only be permitted in small country areas, the risk is still high. Alcohol consumption affects your judgement and that for me is a great enough argument on why not to allow it. Also, the fact that this is in rural areas could be a tremendous risk due to the animals that roam freely in those places. If your judgement is even slightly affected, it could be just enough to cause a collision and even take someone's life. The actions on this motion should be very closely examined and thought through before executed.
